In the space of 700 odd pianos Chickering made a large leap forward introducing a full iron plate. This plate reaches to the edges of the entire perimeter of the case.
These are not the original legs. They most likely would have looked like the legs in Chickering & Mackays #3983, which does still have its original legs and lyre.
