The early Chickering years were in four generl phases. The earliest were the Stewart & Chickering pianos. Mr. Stewart moved on to work in England at which point the Chickering name alone appeared on the fallboaord, such as on this example. Then along came the Mackays and there appeared a few years where the name read Chickering and Mackays. it was during this phase that the full metal plate appeared. After the macKays 'disappeared' at sea the name once again became Chickering alone. Eventually when the children got involved we see Chickering and Sons.
